Phase 1 (the messy phase!) of sealing the leaks in the pond has been completed today, with Isobel Clark, Mark Hobbs and Brian Harris doing most of the heavy work. This involved positioning a plastic liner and then sealing its edges with an expanding clay (250 kg of it) called Bentonite. The idea is that as the winter rains fill the pond, the clay will expand, sealing the liner edges to the base of the pond and allowing the pond to fill to its natural level – for the first time in years.
At the moment you can see the full extent of the liner, running along the road side of the pond, but soon this will all be covered with soil leaving a natural looking slope to the water’s edge. It’s important that while the liner is exposed, it is not disturbed or walked on.
